Rye Brook Women's Tennis Team Places High

RYE BROOK, N.Y. -- The women's tennis team from Rye Brook placed high, garnering second place at a national championship in Arizona recently.

The local team represented the USTA Eastern Section, finishing second at the USTA League Adult 55 & Over 7.0 National Championships held at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex in Surprise, Ariz.

The Rye Brook team lost to a team from La Quinta, Calif., 2-1 in the championship match. 

Earlier in the day, the Rye Brook team defeated a team from Deland, Fla., 2-1 in the semifinals. 

The team advanced this far by winning the round-robin flight contested Friday and Saturday.

The team is captained by Joan Stone of Cos Cob and features Sharon Hawkins of New Rochelle, Joan Behren, Mary Ehlke, Kathy Goltzman, Ann Firestone of Greenwich, Beth Nechamkin of Harrison, Mary Hadley Devine of White Plains, Janice Frank, Nadine Shaoul of New York, Karen Cohn, Lisa Cooper of Greenwich, Nancy Cuppek of Hastings on Hudson and Debbie Evans of Darien; the team plays at Proform Tennis.

Established in 1980, USTA League has grown from 13,000 participants in a few parts of the country in its first year to over 904,000 players across the nation today, making it the world’s largest recreational tennis league.
