WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. A food and water balloon fight broke out in the White Plains High School H cafeteria, resulting in four minor injuries, according to a notice sent out to parents Thursday.
The June 7 food fight, which happened during lunch period, began when several students threw water balloons in the cafeteria around 11:47 a.m. As a result, other students began throwing food, which spilled into the nearby hallways. All four students who reported being injured to the school nurse returned to school the next day, the letter says.
Leroy Dixon, assistant principal of White Plains High School, listed the measures taken by the school that day to ensure the safety of the students.
Administrators, security and staff immediately responded by securing the areas in which food was thrown. Teachers were asked to return to their classrooms by noon to provide supervision to their sixth period students. All available faculty and staff were asked to assist by directing students to their sixth period classrooms.
At 12:05 p.m. a campus lockout was initiated. Students were directed to remain in their classrooms until further notice. During the lockout teachers were asked to take attendance.
Students outside of the White Plains High School and on campus during the lockout were instructed to report to the corridor entrance of North House parking lot door. Teachers and school safety officers were stationed in the North House parking lot entrance to supervise these students.
Administrators and custodians from other White Plains schools were sent to the high school by the superintendent to assist with supervision and cleanup of the building.
Once the building was clean and safe, students were released from their sixth period classroom and reported to their eighth period classroom.
Students were released from school at approximately 2:30 p.m. and were directed to leave campus immediately. All afternoon activities were cancelled except for the One Act Plays and the Senior Awards.
Students and families were informed via call-out that they could return to the school to retrieve personal items from their lockers between the hours of 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The next day school was open and there were no further incidents of poor behavior.
This incident is still being investigated and appropriate disciplinary responses will be taken for those individuals who instigated and/or participated in the food and water balloon fight.
