The sportsmanship award is named after Edgemont's first wrestling coach, Eric Kantor, who started Edgemont's wrestling program in 1964. He was also a math teacher at Edgemont High School for more than 40 years, and he has been the "voice" of the tournament for all of its 34 years.

The award is given to only one of the 19 teams from Section one, Section nine, Connecticut and Catholic Schools who participate in the tournament. Tournament officials, who evaluate the wrestlers and coaches throughout the competition and observe how the teams carry themselves off the mat, select the winner.

"I've never been prouder of these young men who, even when challenged with outstanding competition, never lose focus of who they are and who they represent," said Paul LaVallee, Hendrick Hudson wrestling coach. "Earning this award confirms that we are instilling positive character and respect in each of our wrestlers which is as important, if not more, then winning itself.”

The team placed fifth in the tournament, and both Ryan Loguidice and Beckett Herman made it to the finals. Hector Giron placed third; Ilham Nasirov placed 4th; and Sebastian Burbano, Jacob Anstett and Matt Kempski placed fifth.

The Sailors will head to Pearl River to compete in the New York State Qualifier. The team has a number of seniors who will be fighting for an opportunity to earn a trip to Albany and wrestle against the best in New York State.

"An award such as this is truly an honor,” said Athletic Director Tom Baker. “It is an award that reflects the tremendous character that our wrestlers have. It is nice to see that our student-athletes were recognized for the wonderful young men they are."
