William M. Purdy, 84, Of White Plains

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- William M. Purdy, a lifelong resident of White Plains, died Wednesday, April 27. He was 84.

He was born Sept. 23, 1931, to Ernest and Ethel (Boughton) Purdy.

He graduated from White Plains High School. 

Upon graduation, he joined the Navy and served during the Korean War. After returning from active duty, he joined the White Plains Fire Department where he rose to the rank of lieutenant and remained with the department for 34 years. While in his tenure as a firefighter, he received the Medal of Honor for bravery.

He married Doris Mozzone in 1955.

He is survived by his seven children, William J. Purdy of White Plains, Robert Purdy (Monica) of Bedford, Ellen Henson (James) of White Plains, Cynthia Masters (Charles) of Melbourne, Australia, Mary Moriarty (Daniel) of Tarrytown, and Barbara Kudla (James) of Tarrytown; and 13 grandchildren.

His wife died in 2002 and a son, David, died in 1992.

Visiting will be Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at McMahon, Lyon & Hartnett, 491 Mamaroneck Ave., White Plains, NY 10605. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, May 2, at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Transfiguration in Tarrytown. Interment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, N.Y.
