WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. Video and audio recordings from the Nov. 19, 2011, shooting of Kenneth Chamberlain Sr. have been released to the media by the White Plains Public Safety Department.
Among them are video (click here for Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3) from the Taser gun eventually used on Chamberlain after police responding to an accidentally triggered medical alert Nov. 19 unhinged his door and entered his apartment.
The video reveals an agitated Chamberlain refusing to let go of a hatchet police have said he wedged in the crack in the door. During the hourlong standoff, Chamberlain repeatedly threatens to kill police officers. At the end of the video, when police use the Taser gun on Chamberlain, he shouts to the officers "Shoot me" and "Come on."
The Chamberlain family's lawyers have said that when police entered the apartment, Chamberlain was standing a few feet back. The video from the Taser gun shows Chamberlain standing right at the doorway as police taser him. Only one of Chamberlain's hands, which is empty, can be seen. Police say he was holding a knife when they entered and that he tried to stab a police officer.
The black-and-white video then ends after he has been shot with the Taser, at which point, police shoot him four times with bean bag shots, then fatally shoot him twice.
Police also released the audio recordings from the medical alert system and phone calls, including several from Chamberlain's sister Carol Matthews, who received a call from the Medical Alert company. Matthews called police about the incident, informing them that Chamberlain was on medication. She also calls her daughter, Tonyia Greenhill, which the medical alert's recording picks up.
"Uncle Kenny is going crazy in there," said Greenhill, who lives in the same building. "Ah, the cops are at his door. They are going in cause he's talking like real crazy like out of his head.
Does Uncle Kenny have any weapons on him?"
Matthews says he "has a mental problem" and "needs to go to the hospital."
