Peter Schmidt Sr., who retired in 2005 after more than 20 years with the Greenburgh Police Department, was shot twice when he confronted two men exiting an unoccupied home at 5 Payne Road, in the North Elmsford section of the township, according to Chief Chris McNerney.
Neighbors called Schmidt courageous for spotting and investigating suspicious activity in a home at the corner of Payne and Bayberry roads.
"Even if you're in uniform, people who own the guns, they'll do that,'' said Ravi Rao of Bayberry Road. "We hope our neighbor is in good condition and that they give (the accused) the proper judicial treatment. I hope some attention gets paid to these things."
Schmidt was reported in stable condition at Westchester Medical Center, recovering from bullet wounds to an arm and his torso, McNerney said.
Schmidt’s son, an active Greenburgh police officer who was off-duty during the shooting, ran to the scene and saw two suspects leaving in a blue BMW.
Officer Peter Schmidt Jr. immediately relayed information containing the license plate number of the suspect vehicle to Greenburgh police, McNerney said.
Within minutes, the City of Yonkers Police Department reported they had the BMW stopped on the Sprain Brook Parkway in the area of the Cross County Parkway. The subjects were positively identified and placed under arrest.
The suspects' names had not been released Monday night.
