Miller, hailed for her "tremendous leadership and contributions," was named president in July 2014, the first African-American woman to head the White Plains club. Ted Nygreen, the club's webmaster, was recognized as Rotarian of the Year.
"Heather has led our club in making it more attractive, exciting, energetic and diverse," said David DelMonte, Rotary district governor. "She started new projects to help the homeless and needy in White Plains, including a Thanksgiving food drive, a sandwich-making event and a special 'five-star' dining event for homeless families and a Veterans' Day program to recognize 20 Rotarians who are veterans."
Miller also won accolades for increasing the White Plains Rotary Club's visibility not only in the community, but also to new members. She organized World Polio Day activities on Oct. 24 with events at the Westchester County Executive's Office and at White Plains City Hall.
She proposed support for the fight against Ebola, delivering a grant of $1,000 to the Rotary Club of Monrovia, Liberia. Miller also executed innovative activities to attract and retain members, including monthly cocktail meetings that fostered greater socialization and engagement for members.
Miller says her main goal as president was to do more for the White Plains community. According to DelMonte, she achieved much more than that. She enhanced the club's profile by partnering with community organizations such as the White Plains Public Library and White Plains School District, helped the needy and incorporated young and new members in active role, thus positioning a growing, thriving club for the future.
Miller, the recipient of numerous awards for her community service, is executive director of the Thomas H. Slater Center in White Plains, a community and youth development organization.
