Celebrity Trainer Leads White Plains Mega Yoga Event

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- Court Street will transform from a farmers' market to an outdoor yoga studio June 20 for Westchester County's first-ever mega yoga event, according to the county's Mental Health Association.

After getting your fresh produce from the weekly White Plains Farmers' Market between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., participants of all experience levels can join celebrity yoga teacher and White Plains resident Gwen Lawrence for a one-hour yoga class. She is known for teaching sports-specific yoga and has instructed the New York Giants, Yankees and Knicks.

"As an agency, MHA has long promoted a holistic view of recovery which includes nutrition, exercise, mindfulness as well as traditional treatment," Dr. Amy Kohn, CEO of MHA, said in a statement.

Similar outdoor mega yoga events have been conducted in Times Square and Central Park in New York City, for which 5,000 and 10,000 people attended respectively, according to the statement.

Registration for the event, which will be between Main Street and Martine Avenue, costs $10 and can be done by visiting the association's website. The first 500 to register will get a free yoga mat and gift bag. The rain date is June 27.

"I am so pleased to be working with MHA to bring this unique and exciting event to White Plains," Mayor Thomas Roach said. "It will not only highlight the good work of MHA, but provide an opportunity for everyone, whether a beginner or an experienced practitioner, to learn about and enjoy the benefits of yoga in the heart of our downtown.”
