In its annual holiday travel survey, AAA projects a 0.6 percent increase in the number of people traveling between Nov. 25-29. The slight increase marks the seventh consecutive year of growth for Thanksgiving travel.

Of the 47 million travelers this Thanksgiving:

  • Traveling by auto – 89.3 percent (42 million), a 0.7 of a percent increase from last year.
  • Air Travel – 7.7 percent (3.6 million), a 0.1 of a percent increase from last year.
  • Other modes, including rail, bus, and cruise ship – 3 percent (1.3 million), a 1.4 percent decrease compared to last year.

There’s plenty of reasons why travel has increased this year, such as cheaper gas prices, more spending money and employment growth all contributing.

Drivers nationwide continue to experience significant yearly savings in the price of gas and AAA estimates consumers are saving nearly $265 million on gasoline daily compared to a year ago.

Today’s national average price for a gallon of gasoline is $2.15, which is 66 cents less than the average price on Thanksgiving last year.

According to AAA’s Leisure Travel Index, travelers this holiday also will see a 10 percent decrease in airfares compared to 2014.
