Friday, Sept. 18 is National Cheeseburger Day -- and as good an excuse as any for millions of hungry fans to down one, or two -- who knows? Maybe more.

Lots of people have a favorite cheeseburger place, while just as many prefer to grill them at home. Toppings are probably the No. 1 most discussed and disputed cheeseburger subject.

But, whether simple cheddar or American cheese, or a behemoth with bacon, relish, onions, mushrooms, jalapenos, chili, avocado and barbecue sauce -- there’s a combination for everyone.

There are competing legends as to how cheeseburgers were originated. One is that a man named Lionel Sternberger dropped a slice of American cheese on a burger in the process of being grilled at his father’s Pasadena, CA sandwich shop, The Rite Spot.

Other claims:

  • A cheeseburger appeared on a 1928 menu at O’Dell’s, a Los Angeles restaurant, which listed a cheeseburger, smothered with chili, for 25 cents.
  • Kaelin’s Restaurant – Louisville, Kentucky says it invented the cheeseburger in 1934.
  • 1935 – A trademark for the name “cheeseburger” was awarded to Louis Ballast of the Humpty Dumpty Drive-In in Denver, Colorado.
  • According to its archives, Gus Belt, founder of Steak n’ Shake, applied for a trademark on the word “cheeseburger” in the 1930′s.
