Wegmans, which announced Wednesday its plans to open its first Hudson Valley store with a location on Platinum Mile in Harrison, would be taking a huge step in expanding beyond its traditional homebase.

Of its 92 stores in the mid-Atlantic and New England, 46 are located in the upstate and Southern Tier regions of New York.

Founded in 1916, the chain also has stores in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Massachusetts and Virginia.

Wegmans has been listed by “Fortune” magazine as one of the “100 Best Companies to Work For” and has been recognized by the Food Network as well as “Consumer Reports.” It was also No. 33 in the Top 75 Supermarkets listed by “Supermarket News” (based on sales volume) last year.

According to its website, it employs more than 47,000 people and its annual sales (in 2015) were $7.9 billion.

Its stores are laid out like European open-air markets with tempting fresh breads, imported cheeses and fresh produce on display.

Its larger stores offer 50,000 to 70,000 products, compared to an average of about 40,000 in most supermarkets, it says. Of those products, 3,000 are certified organic.

It sells restaurant quality sushi, soups, entrees, appetizers and side dishes.

There is also a sandwich shop, salad bar, bakery, pizza station, pharmacy, florists and a place to buy housewares and seasonal merchandise, too.
