Agree with Mr Scott. Of course all Democrats have signed on as co-sponsors. They never met a taxpayer dollar they didn't want to spend creating more layers of inefficient government and awarding more fellow Dems with big paychecks. View Comment
Did the president or Nita Lowey say where the money is going to come from? Increase in gasoline tax will be the first thing. The president and all other politicians are pandering. They will say whatever it takes to get elected. Bottom line is that the money has to come from somewhere and that somewhere is the taxpayer. It seems the government and everyone in it are the only ones that don't have a budget. The rest of us can't print money when we want to spend more. We actually have to go out and work to earn it. What a joke! Democrats have been MIA on everything other than taxing and spending Westchester residents out of their homes. I wish they would all just be quiet and go away. They act like fools. The citizens of Westchester were smart enough to see through their facade and elect Rob Astorino for a second term. Get over it.
This entire HUD interference is another example of big liberal government overreach. A total disregard for all the communities involved and the very people they purport to "help"
Affordable housing should be available in EVERY town, city, hamlet etc. and the way to do that is to LOWER TAXES, CREATE JOBS not through forced social engineering.
People of all types want and need affordable housing and should be able to find it anywhere. The lack thereof along with high taxes is a major reason young and old are leaving Westchester County and New York State.
If someone can afford to buy the house next door to me or rent an apartment in my town then I say welcome to the neighborhood. But even I can't afford to stay here any longer due to the high property taxes. I just wish I could sell my home and get out but no one wants to buy because the taxes are too high and on it goes in a never ending vicious cycle.
The answer is to drive down cost of living in Westchester and Rob Astorino has the right idea and the guts to stand up to the bullies at HUD and the county legislators that sold us out to them in the first place.
It amazes me that people actually believe that you must pay higher taxes to receive better services or have better school performance. One has absolutely nothing to do with the other. We've just all been brain washed to accept the NY state of "tax and spend" mind.
I would be happy to see the county give up ownership of golf courses and amusement parks in exchange for lower taxes. I have no use for either and both can be owned and operated by private organizations. That money could be spent on education or to provide better "services" elsewhere.
It's interesting that the worst states are all "blue" states. Maybe it's time we elected a more homogeneous mix of public officials so there is less pandering to special interests on either side of the aisle. How about pandering to the taxpayer for a change, and not with empty promises but with real action and accountability.
Enough is enough. I am leaving NY as soon as I can sell my house...if anyone will buy it with such high taxes.
Quality of life in Buchanan? Tax increases of over 100% since moving to this village less than 10 yrs ago.
For what? Garbage pickup and a police department for a 4 square mile village??
It's time for the Village of Buchanan and it's government to be dissolved and the village be absorbed into the Town of Cortlandt.
Nothing is happening in Buchanan. Ms Knickerbocker's own buildings remain empty of businesses, just tenants in the apartments upstairs. No business can survive in the village of Buchanan and we've seen at least 4 come and go in the past few years.
This Buchanan resident is tired of seeing my taxes rise to support an unnecessary village government and police force.
Consolidating local government and services makes the most sense and will save Buchanan residents from being taxed out of their homes, if we can even sell them. View Comment
Agreed. And unfortunately even when they want help its difficult to shake the grip of these terribly addictive drugs. That's why it's so important for parents, educators and law enforcement to work together to educate kids and enlist their aid to find and stop these predatory drug dealers View Comment
It is obvious that educators and law enforcement are not doing enough. What are we doing to our children that they are so lost and unhappy that they would turn to drugs? There is nothing for them here. They are bored and disconnected and lost. Parents and educators and law enforcement need to step up and work to reach out and talk to our kids. It's heartbreaking and such a terrible loss. These are good kids that made a terrible mistake and it's such a waste. View Comment
The Montrose Deli is normally very careful and always checks ID. Don't know what happened or why but let's not talk about closing them down and running them out of town. Let them pay their fine and be sure it doesn't happen again. View Comment
My heart aches for that poor young man and his family. Bullying is a disgusting and cowardly act and those who perpetrate it should be prosecuted.
Laws should be enacted making it a hate crime because that's exactly what it is. View Comment
Economic segregation? Affordable housing should be completely colorblind and available to everyone that meets the criteria. My 83 year old mother-in-law could barely pay her bills on her social security without help from family and yet she was denied opportunity for affordable housing because she was white. It took years to finally get section 8 approval and even then they put her through hell to get it. A person's race, color or creed should play absolutely no role in qualifying for affordable housing. This is just another example of an overreaching government sticking it's nose where it doesn't belong in an attempt to push their social agenda. I agree with Rob Astorino and am glad he is at least attempting to try and check this out of control government. View Comment
Cuomo is losing his luster fast. He's just another wealthy, totally out of touch politician (Democrat but some Republicans are no better) who thinks he knows what is best for the rest of us.
Just look at the states, counties and other municipalities that are run by Democrats. Unsustainable pension and labor costs, oppressive taxes (NY, CA, Chicago to name a few) and ridiculously liberal gov't entitlement mandates.
I feel for people who are trying to survive on minimum wage today. It's impossible because it's just too expensive to live here. I earned minimum wage years ago and it was tough then but now it's virtually impossible. It's better to be on assistance because if you work minimum wage you cannot get any other help so it's a vicious cycle.
Good decent people who want to work but those who can only earn minimum wage at first have no chance. Transportation, housing, food etc costs are through the roof. Unfortunately the answer is not raising the minimum wage. It's helping the working poor where and when they most need it, instead of penalizing them for working!
It's time for government to tighten it's belt the way the most people are forced to to today. Americans have experienced their own sequester for years. The government and the so called leaders of this state and country haven't felt the pain yet. It's about time they did. And let's vote them out of office next time around too.
I can't tell you the last time I clipped a coupon or used a circular. It's all available on the Internet via smartphones, tablets etc.
The Express and everything in it is garbage and a waste of paper and ink. View Comment
Posting pins on a map is fine, adding the names and addresses of law-abiding citizens was nothing more than a ploy to get some desperately needed attention for a failing paper.
The Journal News is a shadow of the semi-local paper it once was. It takes about 3 seconds to read and most of the news they print is available on the internet for free. Who reads the JN anymore anyway and why would anyone pay for it?
Now if only they would stop dropping that other piece of garbage, The Express, at the bottom of my driveway. View Comment
is this a joke? How can Mr Jenkins keep a straight face and say that the county has degraded and property taxes and other county fees have gone up etc? He must be thinking about WC under Andy Spano and Bill Ryan's tenure.
Ken Jenkins and some members of the Democrat party in Westchester have done nothing but try and obstruct any changes to the tax and spend policies that, under Andy Spano and Bill Ryan, led us to deficits and the need to make cuts to begin with. They left Rob Astorino with a huge mess to clean up and he is doing fine job under the circumstances.
I support the re-election of Rob Astorino because if Ken Jenkins gets elected I will have to sell my home before my taxes go up again.
That is IF I can even sell my home.
Mamaroneck's Carly Rose is amazing and deserves to win.
I just have one question...why do they keep saying she is from Westchester, NY as if it is a town? They introduced the Mayor last night as the "mayor of Westchester"!!! View Comment
When my father was suddenly stricken with a massive brain hemorrhage, he was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center where he received the highest quality of care around the clock. He had no chance of survival, but the team did everything they could to keep him comfortable and pain free and went out of their way to treat our family with compassion and kindness. We were allowed to be with him every minute until he passed away peacefully. We need this medical center to continue to grow and improve it's quality of care. It's vital to our communities. Really? What part of the budget has already been legally passed doesn't Mr Jenkins understand? Perhaps he should ask his two Democrat colleagues. I am sure they can enlighten him.
Mr Jenkin's, please move on and get back to working with your colleagues on both sides, to help Westchester's economy grow to get people back to work and reduce the tax burden on our communities.
Rob Astorino has been the best thing for Westchester County in a very long time (remember Andy Spano?). View Comment
