Dani but you miss the point ...back then as you call it I made 13K a year coming out of college so in todays dollars things were just as difficult for me as they are for college kids today. But as Chris said, we lived with roommates, n some cases total strangers or lived home. We didn't have cell phones and computers and had loans that when you made what we did are equivalent to what graduates are paying today. Yes you are right housing is more expensive but salaries are higher. And while I don't have an issue with affordable housing I do have an issue when the only ones who have the opportunity to rent or purchase them are minorities in OTHER communities instead of those who live in them now....oh wait a SMALL percentage are alloted to residents of the community in question. If we are going to build more affordable housing it can't be for only selected people and shouldn't be advertised only in communities with minorities. It should be open to one and all regardless of their race or where they live...but do I think we need 10,000 more units...sorry no I don't. View Comment
I would assume that as long as these are rentals and the rental prices are kept low because the State and Governments are supplementing them then why wouldn't they as they'd have access to better schools in most case. View Comment
The increases are driven primarily by salaries and what we have to pay into their pension/retirement funds. If something isn't done to control that, taxes will continue to rise. However, I feel all in all Hen Hud did a very good job this go around and it's getting more and more difficult. View Comment
Your a fool. No that's not the case but you cannot compare what happened here to what is happening in countries where we have soliders fighting terrorists who are shooting at them trying to kill them. I'm not going to even waste my time responding to your insane idiotic posts. View Comment
Blabbermouth68 that's exactly what you are. Are you kidding me? We are not intentionally killing innocents, we are killing those who attempt to kill us, radicals, terrorists. Are innocents sometimes caught in these wars, unfortunately yes but in no way are they intentionally targeted as what the case in Boston. This was a full scale direct attack on INNOCENTS people who are NOT at war with terrorists. I hope others find your comments as appalling as I do. View Comment
I am an American middle class person and my parents are immigrants but they came the legal road. No one is questioning the racial breakdown of who gets benefits or whose on welfare nor was this a hit on unions. You are the one who is making that the discussion here and twisting words that were not said. No one is questioning that they want a better life so do those who are trying to come legally and are waiting their turn for that opportunity or those US citizens who want to achieve a better life as well. This is simply the fact that the laws in this country are the laws and those who come illegally regardless of why they come are breaking those laws. I am fine with reforms but it should not be amnesty and until those reforms are in place (like securing our borders) if you are here illegally you should be held accountable for such. View Comment
Come here legally and you can become a citizen. Come here illegally you should be deported. What makes these people any different then US citizens who break the law and go to jail. I'm sick and tired of the woe is me attitude. What about all of those waiting for years to become legal citizens or get green cards who have done it the right way. We should not be even considering amnesty for anyone here illegally until the borders are secured otherwise this will be another repeat of what happened when Regan granted such amnesty to 2-3 million illegals, 10-11 more have come behind them because we failed to secure the borders. You are long winded in your prose Hal. I am not sure where maintaining a work force comes at the price of having to ensure those people live in the same community where they work. Yes that is ideal and I have no problem with that if they can afford it. We've all been there..I worked three jobs once to put food on the table and live where I wanted to live but I did it on my own and where I could afford to live not because I was given a handout or forced upon my neighbor. Sarcasm gets you no where. On section 8 agree those landlords who choose to participate have to deal with it but you are missing the point. My understanding however is this has grown beyond those who choose to participate but all landlords are now required to accept section 8 funding even if they don't want to otherwise it's considered racism or bigotry. No one should be forced to have to accept it if they don't want to, if they do and that is part of the agreement to build low cost housing or to get low financed loans then I agree they have to suck it up. I don't think every landlord is out to suck people dry and make a fortune but to earn a living like everyone else does. And unless you are a landlord yourself I think it's hard for anyone to challenge what they are faced with when dealing with Section 8 and/or being forced to have to participate. Perhaps what has to happen is the the typical bureaucracy with dealing with the government and all that goes with it is where changes are needed. View Comment
Hal, I personally agree with you on the one element of this issue that all legal tender should be accepted regardless of where it comes from. The issue is that the entire decision about forcing affordable housing in communities so that we have an "equal" distribution of people of wealth, race, etc is what's at issue here for me. People should be allowed to live where they want but based on their ability to buy or rent homes in those areas not because they are being forced upon communities. There are many many people in upper westchester communities in Yorktown, Lakeland, Croton, Cortlandt that make 75K or less and live in homes here and that was before HUD forced affordable housing on those same towns. This ideal "state/country" that President Obama and Cuomo want cannot be had on the backs of those of us who continue to pay the bulk of the taxes in this country. Just look at what's happening in the European countries that they are trying to emulate. View Comment
I totally agree with Villager. We need to look at what's going on here...is this going to spread to the rest of this country. When do people start pulling themselves out of where they are like our grandparents, parents and now their children have. Enough already. Mr. Astorino is trying to protect this county from HUD and what this ruling means to those of us who have worked our butts off to be able to buy homes in communities of our choosing. My neighborhood is made up of many people of many races and nationalities but we all worked to achieve the American dream and pay taxes to afford the homes and schools our kids go to. View Comment
Problem is in this democratic state and one where dem's continue to hand out the goodies no republican is going to win especially Astorino. His social programs are not going to improve the economic environment of this state. He has done nothing to lower taxes and make this a more business friendly state which is why people continue to leave. The problem is who can the republican party put up against him to beat him it's sad to say I can't name one. View Comment
