New TZ Bridge: Two Westbound Main Span Towers Done

Two of the new Tappan Zee Bridge’s westbound main towers are now complete and all four are expected to be done in the coming weeks, the state Thruway Authority announced Thursday.

The two towers rise 419 feet above the Hudson.

The project reached another major milestone earlier this month with the installation of the final steel-blue girder assembly for the new span's westbound approach.

The 290-foot structural steel assembly was put together at Tappan Zee Constructor's Port of Coeymans staging yard and transported by barge to the project site where it was placed by the I Lift NY supercrane.

TZC has installed more than 100 similar assemblies of steel girders since the summer of 2015. Many of those assemblies weigh more than 700 tons.

The crane will now be used to install road decks on the span’s Rockland County approach.

The authority said that was expected to start happening by next week and will continue into November.

Meanwhile, TZC is getting ready to realign traffic lanes on the state Thruway (I-87/I-287) near the former Tarrytown toll plaza so that work on the bridge landings can go on.

The new alignment will slightly adjust existing eastbound traffic patterns and is expected to take place overnight on Friday, Oct. 28.

The new alignment will also allow TZC to prepare the site for the New York State Police Troop T’s future barracks.

TZC plans to realign westbound lanes in the area in November.

Work on a new drainage system near the bridge on the Westchester side will continue this week, the authority said.

This operation will require the overnight closures of up to three southbound lanes across the Tappan Zee Bridge from exit 10 (Nyack - South Nyack -Route 9W) to exit 9 (Tarrytown - Sleepy Hollow - Route 9).

The drainage project will involve pavement removal, soil/rock excavation, pipe installation, backfilling and paving.

TZC has taken noise abatement measures in the area.

The specific lane closures at southbound Thruway exit 10 across the bridge are as follows: Friday, Oct. 21, beginning at 9 p.m., one left lane; 10 p.m., two left lanes; 11:59 p.m., three left lanes. The closures end on Saturday, Oct. 22 from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Work is also continuing on the authority’s maintenance dock near the new bridge’s Rockland landing.

It involves partially dismantling the work trestle that was used to construct the westbound span of the new bridge.

Work will take place during daytime hours and is expected to wrapped up by the end of the year.
