YONKERS, N.Y. Just days after signing a contract with his hometown New York Yankees, Yonkers resident and Manhattanville College shortstop Dan Fiorito was still floating in baseball heaven on Saturday.
The last few days have been unbelievable, Fiorito said. Born and raised in Yonkers and being a diehard Yankees fan made this all the more special. After signing, I called my dad, mom, family and friends, and it was a dream come true.
Fiorito has had an outstanding three-year career at Manhattanville, where he graduated in the spring and planned to return to play as a post-graduate student. He was contacted by the Yankees two weeks ago about a tryout and, after working out in Yankee Stadium in Tampa, Fla., was signed to a minor league deal late last week.
Fiorito, who is a Fordham Prep graduate, credited his coaches at Manhattanville and his family for their support in an interview Saturday.
After all the hard work and support my family put into my career and baseball, having this moment to thank them and make them proud means everything, Fiorito said.
The star Valiants shortstop finished his career third all-time at the school in home runs with 21, and fourth in slugging percentage (.648), while also placing sixth in runs scored (116) and total bases (258), seventh in batting average (.397) and runs batted in (108), and 10th in hits (158) and on-base percentage (.474).
Fiorito will be back at Manhattanville this fall to continue his post-grad education and then head to Tampa for spring training in March.
