White Plains Tennis Foundation Receives Grant

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – The Eastern Adult Tennis Foundation in White Plains and the Jerry Alleyne Memorial Foundation in Hartsdale each received a $5,000 grant from the United States Tennis Association.

USTA Serves, the National Charitable Foundation of the USTA, donated more than $400,000 in grants during the 2012 spring season.

The EATF plans to use the grant money to bolster tennis programs for disabled people in Westchester County and nearby areas. The EATF tries to promote awareness of grassroots tennis programs for adults and seniors. The organization also provides financial support and grants for such programs.

The JAMF plans to use the grant to help build its network of after-school programs in elementary, middle schools and high schools in southern Westchester.

The organization was incorporated in 1999 to continue the work of the late Jerry Alleyne, a tennis player and coach who mentored numerous young tennis players in the region.

“We are extremely grateful for the USTA’s support and we’re thankful they understand the need to use tennis to teach life lessons to the youth,” said Loretta Van Raalte, president of the JAMF.  “Our mission is to support the growth and development of young people through a program of tennis and mentoring. There are many deserving youngsters in Westchester County and we’re happy we can serve them.”

USTA Serves awards grants twice a year as a way to help give disadvantaged children a chance to learn the game in an organized way. The organization also wants to fight childhood obesity by promoting physical activity.

A review committee, comprising foundation board members and USTA national staff with input from USTA sections, selects programs that combine tennis with education in the best way and help children be healthier and succeed in the classroom. USTA Serves has donated $11 million to various organizations so far.
