SCARSDALE, N.Y. Playing up in age group class, the White Plains Generals 9-Under baseball team stunned Scarsdales 10-under team Monday, taking the Westchester Baseball Association 10-and-under first-round playoff game with a 4-2 victory at Quaker Ridge School.
The previously unbeaten Generals (16-0-1), playing up in age group for the playoffs, got strong pitching, deft fielding and timely hitting and used a bunt-and-run game to help score three runs in top of the third inning to take a 3-1 lead.
This really is a team, Generals coach Wally Halas said about his young overachievers. Part of the fun for the coaches is the chemistry of the kids. The common thread is they love baseball and they are thirsty to learn. They have learned all the fundamentals, so when we call on them to execute, they are ready.
The Generals moved on to a second-round game to be played Tuesday against TYA at Labriola Field in Eastchester. The Generals pitching staff opened with starter and eventual winner Zach Blot, who gave up a first-inning run but did not allow another run over his two innings on the mound.
Shane Regan and Collin Darcy took over in the middle innings. Darcy allowed one run in the bottom of the fifth inning before giving way to closer Matt Halas, who inherited two runners on base with no outs. Scarsdale loaded the bases on a bunt, but Halas got a fielder's choice that scored a run to cut the Generals lead to 3-2 before getting a strikeout, then making a diving catch along the third base line for the third out of the fifth.
Aidan McDonough had two hits and drove in the fourth run in the top of the sixth that sealed the victory. Regan, Halas and Blot each drove in a run in the three-run third inning. Christian Koutsoubis scored the fourth run. The other Generals are: Justin Di Savino, Brandon Flissler, Caleb Gillen, Matt Gjokaj, Justin Hanratty, Aiden McDonough, Tyler OBrien, Joey Portanova, Matt Kelly and Khari Wilson.
