White Plains Graduate Honored For Scoring 1,000th Career Point In College

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- Senior guard Alexis Nunez, a White Plains High School graduate, was honored on Wednesday, Jan. 21, by the SUNY Cobleskill Athletic Department for joining the men's basketball 1,000 point career scoring club.

The ceremony was prior to the team’s 72-70 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) victory over Cazenovia College. 

Nunez became the Fighting Tigers first men’s basketball player to reach the 1,000 point career scoring mark since the Cobleskill athletic program made the move from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) level of competition to the NCAA level of competition in 2008.

He also becomes only the third player in program history, since the college began competing in nationally sanctioned competition in 1946, to score 1,000 points in a playing career.

The White Plains native reached the 1,000 point plateau on Saturday, Jan. 17 on the road versus NEAC rival Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. when he converted on a free throw with 26 seconds remaining in overtime of a 72-64 Cobleskill victory. Nunez led all scorers in the contest with 21 points. The White Plains High School alumnus currently ranks third on the Fighting Tigers all-time points scoring list with 1,043 in 85 games played. This season he is averaging to date 14.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.4 steals per game while shooting 38.5 percent from the field, including 39.1 percent from three-point range, and 82.1 percent from the free throw line. Cobleskill is currently 6-8 overall on the year and is tied for the lead in the NEAC’s North Division with a 4-2 mark in league action.
