WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. The White Plains Generals under-11 baseball team scored twice in the bottom of the final inning Sunday to win a thrilling 3-2 victory over visiting Rye Brook in the Westchester Baseball Association championship game.
Generals pinch runner Brandon Flissler scored the tying run on a bases-loaded walk to Zack Blot to make it 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth, and Anthony Burgio lined a bullet off the Rye Brook pitcher's leg that scored Matt Halas with the winning run.
White Plains, a team that went unbeaten as 10-year-olds last summer to win a WBA summer league title, took the lead in the bottom of the first when Halas reached on a base hit, stole second and scored on a ground ball by teammate Shane Regan and a Rye Brook error.
Rye Brook took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning with a pair of triples and two singles, but Burgio and Halas did not allow a run the rest of the way. Halas, who relieved Burgio on the mound in the top of the fifth inning, shut down Rye Brook to earn the win. Burgio pitched four strong innings as the starter. The rest of the Generals roster includes: Collin Darcy, Justin Di Savino, Caleb Gillen, Matt Gjokaj, Justin Hanratty, Christian Koutsoubis, Aiden McDonough, Tyler OBrien, Joey Portanova and Khari Wilson.
