White Plains Bernies Youth Football Opens Season

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – The White Plains Bernies Youth Football club will open its fall season with two games Saturday at White Plains Middle School Highlands campus turf field.

The Bernies’ fifth-and sixth-grade team will face the Valhalla Vikings at 8:30 a.m. and the third-and fourth-grade squad will host Pleasantville’s Panthers at 10 a.m. in the Westchester Youth Football League games.

Fifth-and sixth-grade Coach Mike DiSanto, who is also the Vice President of the WYFL, said the Bernies program has been working with local youngsters in the White Plains area for more than 50 years in an effort to prepare young players for scholastic football.

“Our philosophy is grounded in respect, sportsmanship, teamwork and discipline,” DiSanto said of the league’s goals.  “Many of our of players have gone on to play football for White Plains High School and Archbishop Stepinac, where we have a long, withstanding, working relationship with both programs.”

The Bernies program, founded in 1958, now includes more than 150 youngsters in flag, for first and second grade, tackle, for third through sixth grade and cheerleading. It participates in the WYFBL with teams from  Ardsley, Armonk, Bronxville, Cortlandt Manor, Dobbs Ferry, Greenburgh, Mount Vernon, Ossining, Pleasantville, Valhalla, Westlake, Tarrytown, Tuckahoe and North Yonkers.
