WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. Tight end Austin Taps caught two touchdown passes from quarterback Daniel Hoffer Sunday and Stepinac opened a four touchdown lead before halftime of a 28-13 victory over Holy Cross in the Catholic High Schools Football League AAA quarterfinal game played at Stepinac High School.
The second-seeded Crusaders (7-2) earned the right to host No. 3 seed Xaverian in next weeks semifinal game. Stepinac defeated seventh-seeded Holy Cross 34-14 two weeks ago in a regular season game.
Scoreless after one quarter, Taps and Hoffer opened the scoring with a 32-yard connection for a 6-0 lead and Przemyslaw Popek added the point-after-kick for a 7-0 lead.
Crusaders linebacker Vincent Narog scored on a 33-yard interception return to pad the Crusaders lead to 13-0. Stepinacs running quarterback Mark White then scored on a 4-yard run and followed with a two-point conversion pass to Taps for a 21-0 lead.
Taps and Hoffer connected again later in the fourth quarter on a 35-yard passing play and the Crusaders had a 28-0 lead going into halftime.
Holy Cross scored once in the third quarter and again in the fourth to pull within 28-13.
