Stepinac Baseball Trips St. Ray’s in Season Opener

BRONX, N.Y. -- Senior right-hander Chris Huertas allowed three hits and one earned run Monday, lifting the visiting Archbishop Stepinac baseball team to a 4-1 victory over St. Raymond's (Bronx) in the Catholic High School Athletic Association season opener.

Huertas struck out six and walked two over seven innings, allowing the lone run in the first inning before shutting out the Ravens the rest of the way. Junior first baseman Julian Ponce drove in two runs and junior Skylar Mercado also drove in a run for the Crusaders.

Skylar Mercado had three hits for the Crusaders and Danny Hoffer added two hits for the winners Stepinac will meet Cardinal Hayes Wednesday at 11 a.m. in its next game.
