Port Chester's Sound Shore Named Among Top U.S. Tennis Facilities

PORT CHESTER, N.Y. -- Sound Shore Indoor Tennis, in Port Chester, is one of 12 facilities being recognized by the United States Tennis Association, in its 35th annual Outstanding Facility Awards, which recognizes excellence in the construction or renovation of tennis facilities.

Sound Shore will be honored in New York City on Sept. 1 at an awards luncheon.

The facility has been family-owned and -operated since 1974. The public facility that is open year-round, with no membership fees or minimum required. The facility offers recreational play and high-quality tennis programs for adults and juniors of all ages, including men's and women’s leagues, clinics, high performance training, private lessons, and 10 and under.

As a member of the USTA for decades, Sound Shore hosts tournaments, teams, playoffs and contributes to the parks programs. Sound Shore also supports numerous local charities, organizations, schools and community events. There are 12 indoor climate-controlled courts with blended lines. The facility includes lounges, locker rooms, ample parking and a nationally acclaimed pro shop.

"Great tennis facilities like Sound Shore help us to grow the game at the grass-roots level, and we are proud to recognize them for their ongoing impact on the sport of tennis," said Kurt Kamperman, chief executive of Community Tennis for USTA. "Sound Shore has embraced many of our tennis initiatives and kept the sport at the forefront of its community each year."

To be considered for an award, facilities must be under the jurisdiction of a park and recreation department, an educational institution, a nonprofit corporation or be a private or commercially-owned and operated facility that offers both USTA and public programming designed to help grow tennis.

Facilities were judged on the following criteria:

  • overall layout and adaptation to site;
  • excellence of court surface and lights;
  • ease of maintenance;
  • accommodations for players, spectators, press and officials;
  • aesthetics;
  • graphics -- including signs and landscaping;
  • amenities like casual seating for spectators, food services and social areas; and
  • the facilities' participation in USTA programs.

All 2016 award winners will receive a wall plaque and an all-weather sign.
