Orienta Beach Club Cancer Fundraiser Is Saturday

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – More than 75 swimmers are expected to take the plunge and count their laps Saturday as the Orienta Beach Club hosts its annual pool swim for Swim Across America-Long Island Sound's fight against cancer.

Event coordinator Susan Steffey Eggers said Orienta expects at least 75 swimmers and hopes to have a strong showing as volunteer swimmers continue to register for the swim.

"Last year, we hosted around 115 swimmers," Eggers said. "We will continue to get registrations up to the last minute, and some people won't register until they arrive. Our swim this year is on Saturday morning, so we are in full preparedness mode right now."

Orienta's enthusiastic participation has been generated by two decades of local involvement in Swim Across America’s local Swim Across America-Long Island Sound and local pool and swim club events celebrating the group’s 20th anniversary this summer. The main event is the Long Island Sound Swim set for July 28 off the shore off the Larchmont Yacht Club.

Swim Across America has raised more than $12 million over 20 years; $1.2 million last year at Long Island Sound and pool swims. Proceeds from local swim events go to several organizations, including Cancer Support Team of Westchester County, Tommy Palazzo Fellowship at Columbia University, Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital of New York-Presbyterian Medical Center, DeMatteo Research and Swim Across America’s laboratories at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
