Cousins Scores 30 As Mount Vernon Rolls Past White Plains

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – White Plains was the last Section 1 team to beat Mount Vernon, which it did last year. On Tuesday, the Knights did not let the Tigers come anywhere close to repeating that feat.

The Knights had their way with the Tigers and dominated the visiting opponent, 89-33. Isaiah Cousins led all scorers by a comfortable margin with 30 points. He made 10 two-point field goals and added three three-pointers.

In total, 12 players scored for Mount Vernon out of the 15 who played.

White Plains coach Spencer Mayfield said he expected the matchup to be a tough one, particularly in Mount Vernon’s gym.

“Games with Mount Vernon are always tough,” Mayfield said. “You have to come to compete and play. It is what it is. If you don’t compete, you get beat.”

White Plains competed, but everything seemed to break Mount Vernon’s way, from offensive rebounds to alley-oops to a half-court shot that seemed to home in on the net at the end of the third quarter.

The Knights built an early lead and continued to stretch it as the game progressed. Mount Vernon never took its foot off the gas and the Tigers were practically out of the game by halftime, when the score was a lopsided 46-20.

After the crushing loss, Mayfield said his team would simply have to absorb the defeat.

“Not a time for building up the morale right now,” Mayfield said. “(It’s) time (to) try to get better. It was just an awful performance and you’ve got to deal with it and face it and move on.”

Anthony Williams scored 10 points to lead the Tigers and Akeem Williams led the team with eight rebounds. As a unit, the Tigers were 12-24 from the free throw line.

The dismal showing led Mayfield to say that his team must hit the reset button and build up from the ground again.

“Got to go to practice and start all over from square one,” Mayfield said. “That was a square one performance, so let’s start all over.”
