The benefit also serves as the kickoff event for the Youth Bureau’s year-long 45th anniversary celebration.
Richardson began his professional career as a principal dancer with Alvin Ailey and the American Ballet Theatre. He performed on Broadway in “Fosse,” “Movin’ Out” and “After Midnight.”He is co-founder and artistic director of Complexions Contemporary Ballet, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Richardson has also appeared on television as a choreographer on Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance.”
The Friends selected Richardson as its Artistic Honoree because of his commitment to giving back to the community and fostering the next generation of dancers. He has agreed to incorporate young men from the White Plains community into his performance.
Aubrey Lynch II, the founder of ALEEArts (Aubrey Lynch Extra Essential Arts) is choreographing the ensemble piece and says he wants the young participants to understand how fortunate they are to share the stage with a dance giant like Richardson.
“Richardson is not only one of the greatest American dancers of our time, but he is dedicated to nurturing youth through dance. We are eager to honor Richardson at the benefit and excited to see him perform with our youth – it will be something special,” said Reva L. Golkar, president of The Friends.
Other performers include dancers from ALEEArts, O’Rourke Irish Dancers, Keen Dance Theater and highlighting the benefit’s theme of reflecting on the role of dance in the Youth Bureau’s history, a performance by Dancers Supreme, a group directed by former Youth Bureau participant Vanessa Aird.
VIP tickets for the benefit are $125 and general admission tickets are $50 and $30. VIP tickets include a reception immediately after the performance.
