WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- Every third grader in the White Plains Public School district received a dictionary as a gift from the Mid Westchester Elks Lodge 535, to enhance their education.
The Dictionary Project was founded in 1995 to promote literacy in third grade as children transition from learning how to read to identifying and using information. The Elks joined this initiative in 2004 and have donated more than 1.2 million dictionaries nationwide.
Six hundred lodges actively participate in the program.
