The $192.95 million budget proposal would increase spending by 2.19 percent and the tax rate by $17.71 to $583.21 per $1,000 of assessed valuation. The budget would comply with the state-mandated tax cap.
The public will vote on the budget and candidates for the Board of Education from noon to 9 p.m. May 21 at their designated polling location, which include: Ridgeway School; Highlands Middle School; Church Street School; Battle Hill Fire Station #5; Rochambeau School; and Mamaroneck Avenue School. Call 914-422-2000 to find your polling location.
Two board seats are up for election. Candidates must be at least 18 and have lived in the city for one year. To run for one of the seats, you must get a petition from the district clerk at 5 Homeside Lane, get it signed by 100 qualified voters and return it by May 1.
Registration for new voters is from noon to 5 p.m. May 4 at Mamaroneck Ave. School on Nosband Avenue. For absentee ballots, call the district clerk’s office at 914-422-2071.
Before the community vote, there will be a public hearing May 13 on the budget.
The budget must be passed May 21 by a majority vote of White Plains voters. If the budget fails, the board may resubmit the original budget or a revised one for a June 18 vote or adopt a contingency budget that has no tax levy increase from the previous year. If a second vote fails, the board must adopt a budget with no tax levy increase from 2012-13. This would force the school district to reduce its proposed 2013-2014 budget by $6,157,990.
