The middle school redesign will change the way White Plains Schools use its two middle schools. Eastview Middle School will be used as a sixth-grade academy and seventh- and eighth grade students will go to Highlands Middle School.
White Plains students’ scores on the state tests dropped significantly in 2009 when exams became more rigorous, prompting this redesign. In 2012, 57 percent of eighth-graders qualified as proficient in English Language Arts and 67 qualified as proficient in math. The Middle School Redesign Steering Committee was tasked with exploring school models to ease students into middle school and improve scores.
The school board invites incoming sixth-graders and their parents to go to Eastview Middle School from 7 to 8:30 p.m. March 14 to learn more about transition activities, schedule format and guidance activities and assistance. There will also be opportunities to ask questions and take a tour of the building. Eastview Middle School is on 350 Main St. Students and faculty will meet in Room 109.
A second presentation will be held for incoming seventh- and eighth-graders at Highlands Middle School from 7 to 8:30 p.m. March 18. The same format will be used. Highlands Middle School is on 128 Grandview Ave. Students and their parents will meet in Room 261.
Sixth-grade is still an elementary grade by certification, said Superintendent of Schools Chris Clouet, who will leave for a job in Tarrytown at the end of the school year.
