The siblings waited for the bus shortly after 8 a.m. with their camera-wielding parents, Andrew and Karen, who had mixed feelings about the start of the school year.
“Well, our daughter is very excited. She loves school,” Andrew said. “Obviously we’re very excited as well. But there’s a little heartbreak because our son is going to kindergarten; first time away from home all day.
Cassia, 8, said she is looking forward to meeting her new teacher and seeing her friends. She went through a bullying situation last year, but her mother said the school got involved right away and resolved the issue.
“All the teachers have been great,” Andrew said. “And they really make a big effort for student, teacher and parent participation, like keeping the home life involved.”
Like Cassia, Christian Benabids, 7, was excited to go to school, as well as to ride the bus. His family spent the last two years in Utah and they didn’t offer school bus service, according to Christian’s mother, Christina. When she mentioned riding the bus, Christian quickly perked up.
They lived in White Plains prior to moving to Utah.
While waiting for the bus Wednesday morning, Christian made friends with Gabby Brown, who also enters second grade at Mamaroneck Avenue School. Gabby said she is most excited to make new friends, and to show off her cool new purple sneakers.
Gabby’s father, Fabian, said they spent their summer going to parks, including Playland.
Amy Amigon, 10, went on a 16-day trip to Mexico to visit her father’s family, which they have done four times. She also learned to ride a bike without training wheels, which her mother, Isabelle, said was a big accomplishment.
The incoming fifth grader shook her head from side-to-side when asked if she was excited for school.
“This is her last year at MAS,” Isabelle said. “She and her sister, one is going to go to high school and she is going to middle school. One more year and that’s it.”
Another incoming second grader Zana Zeqiri, 7, spent four weeks this summer in Europe, traveling from Kosovo to Montenegro to Albania. Her favorite part was staying in the hotel. Wednesday, she boarded the school bus bound for Post Road School to start the school year.
