The league recently sent two students to Albany to experience state government in action and awarded its annual scholarship.
Vanessa Aceitano and Jacquie Rayo, two White Plains High School students, participated in the league's three-day Students Inside Albany Program. The two students, along with 60 others from around the state, got a firsthand education about state government. They toured the state Capitol, had an opportunity to shadow their senators, attended a session in the Assembly chamber, heard a series of interactive lectures and learned about the role of lobbyists in the legislative process.
Aceitano's favorite subject in school is social studies. She’s active in the White Plains Youth Bureau and the Mayor’s Youth Council. After her experience in Albany she’s thinking about going into politics.
Rayo's favorite subject is history. She also has a desire to help her community, but in a different fashion. She would eventually like to be a police officer.
This year’s recipient of the league’s $500 scholarship, was Kristin Sutton, a straight-A student through all four years at White Plains High School while taking the most rigorous courses. She also was president of the Youth and Government Club, and this summer she is putting her interest in government into action by serving as an intern for U.S. Rep Nita Lowey, D-Westchester/Rockland.
Sutton plans to major in political science when she enrolls in Fordham University in the fall.
