White Plains High Students Advance As National Merit Semifinalists

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- White Plains High School seniors Michael Ainsworth, Jacob Brady, Justin George and Sinead Hunt were named semifinalists in the 2015-16 National Merit Scholarship Competition.

About 16,000 semifinalists were named nationally -- less than 1 percent of U. S. high school seniors – who will continue in the competition to advance to finalist level and compete for about 7,400 scholarships worth more than $32 million. The program honors individual students who show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies. 

Commended students in the competition are: Meredith Abato, Joan Gomez-Aguilar, Lucia Iannone, Jennifer Jasne, Max Kratzok, Isabelle Levine, Charlotte Mead, Rose Reiken, Esther Ritchin, Jared Roseman, Sarah Samaranayake and Aneri Suthar. They placed in the top 5 percent of students who entered the competition. 

In the National Hispanic Recognition Program, Joan Gomez-Aguilar, Lucia Iannone, David Rosas, Sarah Samaranayake and Caroline Wisell were named Scholars. 

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation, a not-for-profit organization, was established in 1955 specifically to conduct the annual National Merit Program, to honor the nation’s scholastic champions and encourage the pursuit of academic excellence.
