White Plains High Snags First Place In Academic Competition

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – The White Plains High School Academic “A” Team came in first among 44 teams in the Westchester Academic Challenge of Knowledge Organization (WACKO) tournament on Nov. 1 at White Plains High School.

The team beat Valhalla High School in the semifinals and then topped Briarcliff High School in the finals. Members of the team were Captain Esther Ritchin, Jacob Brady, Noah Lichtblau and Drew Smiley.

The White Plains “B” Team won its division with a score of 5-0. Members are Captain Seth Jaffe, Michael Ainsworth, Angelica Duque, Max Kratzok and Phillip Tortoriello.

The “A” team is now 12-1 for the current year and the “B” team is 8-1. 

Adviser Les Roby brought White Plains to the National Academic Team Championship for the first time in 1990, when they finished second in the nation. Roby holds the all-time NAC record for lifetime wins in the competition.
