WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – White Plains High School students will hear representatives of the Hope’s Door domestic violence shelter discuss teen dating abuse at an awareness program Thursday morning.

“One in five girls in Westchester will be in an abusive relationship before her high school graduation,” according to a press release from school spokeswoman Juliana Wynohradnyk.

Hope’s Door representatives “will be on hand to discuss what they are doing in schools across Westchester, including White Plains High School," Wynohradnyk said.  Other topics will be the Love Shouldn’t Hurt initiative and the STAR (Students Terminating Abusive Relationships) Leadership Program, Wynohradnyk said.

“STAR meetings are organized and facilitated by Hope's Door. Meetings address student concerns about violence in their community and in their school and, most importantly, focus on creating solutions to teen dating abuse."

Guests will include County Executive Rob Astorino, White Plains Mayor Thomas Roach, White Plains High School Principal Ellen Doherty and student participants in the school’s STAR Program, said Wynohradnyk.
