WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Laughter will fill the White Plains High School auditorium this weekend as the drama club performs “Urinetown: The Musical.”

“ ‘Urinetown’ is an unusual show that is both entertaining and thought-provoking,” said director Penelope Cruz. “The students really bring out the satirical nature of the show while singing and dancing so well.”

The 2001 Tony Award-winning musical "satirizes capitalism, legislation, social irresponsibility, populism, bureaucracy, corporate greed and municipal politics," the musical's program says.

"The show also parodies musicals such as ‘The Cradle Will Rock’ and ‘Les Misérables,’ and the conventions of the Broadway musical itself," the program says.

The 22-member cast and those working in the orchestra and stage crew range from ninth- to 12th-grade students, Cruz said.

Rehearsals for the musical began at the end of November and come to fruition with three performances this weekend.

On Friday and Saturday, the musical starts at 7:30 p.m., and the Sunday matinee starts at 3 p.m. Tickets are $5 for students, seniors and staff and $15 for the public.

The performance will be at White Plains High School, 550 North St.
