The VRES children learned more about animals from two members of Pets Alive, a no-kill animal shelter located on the border of Elmsford and Greenburgh.
The students asked questions about donations, volunteering and the animals' daily routines. Answering other questions, the representatives also explained what breeds are housed at Pets Alive, as well as where the animals come from. At the end of the assembly, the two representatives talked about how they place Pets Alive's dogs and cats in their "forever homes" - when they are adopted and find a family to care for them. They noted that in addition to a family wanting a pet, Pets Alive ensures that the animal is placed in the correct home by asking question about the family (how many members, visitors, noise level, etc.). They also discussed the proper way to approach a new dog. They said that while it is exciting to run toward a dog and pet its head, most do not enjoy that. Instead, they suggested to approach it slowly and crouch onto one knee to be on its level. Offer a hand for the dog to smell, and then pet its body, not its head.
