SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. – A superintendent search committee for the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns has narrowed down a field of candidates to White Plains Superintendent Christopher Clouet, officials announced Friday.

Clouet will meet with students, staff, parents and community members Feb. 13. The Board of Education of the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns will look to appoint Clouet at its Feb. 14 meeting after a site visit and background check.

Clouet, if hired, will replace Superintendent Howard Smith. Smith is retiring after 11 years.

“We felt that Dr. Clouet's previous experiences as an educator are an excellent match for the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns,” School Board President B. Joseph Lillis said.

Clouet said he was excited about the opportunity.

"The opportunity to work in Tarrytown is exciting for me," Clouet said in a statement. "Because of its size, I look forward to being able to have more direct contact with students while continuing to work on 21st Century challenges facing all schools."

School board members were pleased with Clouet's work in a diverse community and his “proven record of success,” Lillis said. Lillis added the board was pleased Clouet, who also speaks Spanish and Portuguese, is trilingual.

Clouet earned a doctorate in educational administration from the Teachers College at Columbia University, a master's degree in international studies from Brown University, a master's degree in corporate and political communication from Fairfield University and an undergraduate degree in sociology from Southern Connecticut State University.

Clouet previously served as superintendent in New London, Conn., as well as a high school teacher, elementary teacher, director of resources and learning technology, curriculum coordinator, assistant principal and principal.

The Public Schools of the Tarrytowns received more than 35 applications in its national superintendent search, officials said. Search consultants from Hazard, Young, Attea and Associates coordinated the search.

White Plains School Board President Rosemarie Eller said, “The board of education appreciates Dr. Clouet’s service to White Plains and wishes him well in his future endeavors. Our board is well aware of the excellent reputation of the White Plains educational system and we will work diligently to continue that tradition.”

White Plains officials said plans to find a replacement for Clouet will be announced after Clouet and Tarrytown finalize a deal.
