WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. –Archbishop Stepinac High School chose an old face for its new varsity head basketball coach.
Steve Herman will succeed Tim Philip, who stepped down earlier this year after 10 years.
Herman was the junior varsity basketball coach from 1991 to 1994. During that time, he took Stepinac to the CHSAA semifinals each year.
“Stepinac is very pleased with its selection of Mr. Herman as the next coach,” Stepinac President Father Thomas Collins said. “His energy, enthusiasm and knowledge of the game was what led us to our final decision.”
Herman is the fourth-leading all-time scorer at Fordham Prep. He went on to Holy Cross College, where he played under coach George Blaney. Most recently, he coached JV basketball at Fordham Prep. He was also varsity assistant coach.
The search committee received 50 resumes and interviewed eight candidates. They narrowed the field to four, then chose Herman. He will be the Catholic school’s 11th varsity basketball coach. Others include Nat Volpe, Tom Carney, Larry Dick, Gene Slattery, Gene Doris, Frank Henderson, Ed Sands, Dennis Gallagher, Tim McGrath and Tim Philp.
Herman will take over in the fall for the 2013-2014 season.
