WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. Peter Yarrow, who grew famous while performing with Peter, Paul and Mary, opened his performance in the City Center Barnes and Noble Thursday by singing to a crowd "about a few children who go to school on the Boston Post Road."
The folk singer tailored his songs to delight the dozen kids dancing at his feet and remind the audience that a portion of the night's proceeds would benefit the Post Road Elementary School in White Plains.
A few kids helped Yarrow explain the benefits of Post Road by telling the singer that the school was good because "you learn there." Yarrow then invited a few children up to help him sing "Puff the Magic Dragon" and other tunes before reading his book titled "The Night Before Christmas."
Caroline Furry, a PTA board member at Post Road, said she was pleased that close to 50 people stopped by to support the school.
"We had a fun time. The children seemed to really enjoy him. He was very engaging," said Furry, who has two kids at Post Road. "We appreciate him promoting Post Road in his songs."
So far, the PTA has raised more than $500 thanks to customers mentioning Post Road at the register Thursday. However, the bookstore will continue to donate a portion of proceeds from online sales when customers enter book fair ID 10616639 until Dec. 20.
The PTA plans to use proceeds from the fundraiser to support fifth grade graduation activities such as yearbook, field day and graduation T-shirts.
