WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- About 150 parents, students and faculty from Good Counsel Academy held another protest outside the campus Monday, decrying the expected sale of the school's property at 52 N. Broadway in White Plains.

News of the proposed closing of the Catholic school came after Good Counsel nuns retained a real estate firm to try to market the property due to many of the nuns getting older.

The school may relocate to New Rochelle, but many students have said that's not an option for them.

The Sisters of the Divine Compassion, which founded the school, is forcing the academy to either move or close by July 1, 2015, held a staff retreat on the property Monday.

"This is a very difficult and painful time for the schools," the Sisters of the Divine Compassion said in a statement. "They have been unable to become self-sustaining despite nearly a decade of focused attempts and the Sisters of the Divine Compassion subsidizing their costs and expenses.  Unfortunately, the Sisters are at a time in their Congregation’s history when they are no longer able to contribute financially to the schools."

Students who had the day off held signs that read: "Keep Compassion Alive,'' "Save GCA," and "We are a family."

According to parents, Divine Compassion leadership has refused to address the situation, not attended any meetings with parents or teachers, and ignored letters and telephone calls, despite a plea to save Good Counsel and not sell the property. The North Broadway site has been for sale since May.
