The initiative, which began as Teens Run Yonkers, is intended to transform students’ lives through running and positive adult mentorship. The goal of the program is to inspire students to set achievable goals, hold themselves accountable and push themselves further than they imagined so that they can complete the goal of running either a 5K, 10K, 10-miler or a half or even full marathon at different times during the year.

As the inaugural class, between 10 and 15 students from Alexander Hamilton Junior/Senior High School will participate in the initiative, which will begin in the early spring. Running coaches and mentors will run with the teens and oversee weekly training sessions and weekend practice runs. Volunteers from Teens Run Westchester will also work with AHHS staff to schedule various in-school leadership and goal setting meetings with the students.

“We are very excited to partner with the great folks at Teens Run Westchester in support of our students, “said Superintendent Joseph Ricca. “Setting goals, staying committed and striving to achieve are skills that will serve our students well both in and outside of the classroom.”

Ricca said the unique partnership blends the challenge of goal setting and physical exercise in a setting that is supportive and constructive for the participants. “We know that mentorship works to elevate performance and we look forward to a very positive experience for our students,” he added.
