Counseling Offered As Search Continues For Tyler Madoff

SCARSDALE, N.Y. – Community members gathered Monday at Scarsdale High School as search efforts resumed off the coast of Hawaii for Tyler Madoff, a White Plains resident and member of the Scarsdale class of 2014. The search and rescue mission for Madoff was called off Thursday night by the Coast Guard, but picked up again Monday by the Hawaii County Fire Department.

There was counseling available for all members of the Scarsdale school community on Monday after high schooler Tyler Madoff was swept out to sea off the coast of Hawaii.

Psychologists and house counselors were available at the high school as well as at the Scarsdale-Edgemont Family Counseling Service. Trained professionals were available individually for parents, faculty and students. According to a statement by Scarsdale Superintendent of Schools Michael V. McGill, further arrangements will be made if necessary.

Tyler Madoff, 15, was hiking on Wednesday, July 4 along the shoreline of Hawaii's Big Island with a group from Bold Earth Teen Adventures. While taking a break in a tide pool near Kealakekua Bay, waves swept Madoff and one other boy into the Pacific Ocean around 3 p.m. The other boy, 15, was hospitalized on Oahu and is expected to make a full recovery.

According to McGill, the Madoffs issued a statement from Hawaii, thanking those involved in the search and rescue operation, as well as the school community that showed its support.

District officials said they will remain in touch with the Madoffs, providing further information, as is “appropriate and consistent with their wishes.”

In an e-mail, Vicki Presser, of the Scarsdale Schools Public Information Office, said that the district has nothing more to add at this time, and they are respecting the family's wish for privacy.
