Waterfront View, Local Ingredients Fill 'Menu' At Haverstraw Eatery

HAVERSTRAW, N.Y. - The list of esteemed restaurants Steve Lauterbach has worked in, and the chefs he has worked with, is extensive. From The Rainbow Room to Lutèce in its heyday, The Peninsula, The St. Regis; the list goes on.

Ingredients are sourced locally as much as possible at 16 Front Street in Haverstraw.

One key to success in the restaurant business, according to the new chef and partner at 16 Front Street in Haverstraw, is location.

"How much better of a location can you have?" Lauterbach said, seated at the bar inside 16 Front Street and looking out onto the Hudson River. It was a gloomy day but the view was still impressive.

Lauterbach and Owner Bob Milone are hoping their location on the river and a menu full of modernly-eclectic, classically-inspired fare will be a winning combination at their re-opened restaurant. "I have high hopes for this place," said Lauterbach.

The restaurant opened its doors in the middle of May, it's second type of opening in as many years.

After opening post-Superstorm Sandy in May 2015, 16 Front Street closed its doors to reorganize six months later.

As for what's popular food-wise, Lauterbach said the menu experiences periodic changes but the best sellers so far include small plates like a roast beet and rosemary infused goat salad with flavored oils and arugula and the seared sesame crusted ahi tuna with avocado, Moroccan couscous and crisp parsley.

Must-try entrees, he added, include a grilled marinated skirt steak served with charred sweet corn salad and mashed yams, and a prawn and day-boat scallop fricassee served with sweet pea risotto, crisp leek and mint tangle.

The quality of these dishes stems from the quality of the ingredients that compose them, sourced from local vendors in Orange County and the Catskills region, Lauterbach said.

And, with warm weather upon us, the restaurant is ready for its close-up and has plenty of room to accommodate. There's space for up to 70 guests indoors and another 60 on the outdoor patio. The eatery is also available for private parties as well as catering.
