Danbury Flyers Run Off With Medals At National Meets

DANBURY, Conn. -- The Danbury Flyers capped off a fantastic indoor track and field season by bringing home several medals from the two different national youth championships: the 2016 AAU Indoor Track and Field National Championship and the 2016 Hershey Youth Track and Field National Championship.

The AAU Nationals were held March 12-13, at the PG Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, Md., and the Hershey Nationals were held March 11-13, at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Center in Staten Island, N.Y.

At the AAU Nationals, Max Coisman won a gold medal in the 1,500 meter Racewalk (boys 11-12). Bronze medals, which were given out to athletes finishing in third through eighth place, were also won by Flyers team members. Valerie Fox won a bronze medal for her fifth place in the 3,000 meters (girls 13-14). And rounding out the medals earned for the Flyers were two top eight performances: Adam Fox in the 3,000 meters (boys 13-14) and Max Coisman in the shot put (boys 11-12).

At the Hershey Nationals, the Flyers earned several bronze medals, which were awarded to athletes who finished their event in third through sixth place. The 4x400m relay team (girls 11-12) of Briana Gilliard, Aaliyah Novas, Sofia Whelchel, and Mariana Teixeira captured fourth place, while the 4x200m relay team (boys 9-10) of Kieran Edwards, Kaidyn Nalley, Jesse Mboya, and Kyle Rwabukamba finished in fifth. In addition, there were were two sixth place finishes for the Flyers: Elizabeth Schretzenmayer 1,500 meter racewalk (girls 11-12) and Julian Farmer Campbell in the high jump (boys 9-10).

The two national competitions were the final indoor track and field meets for the Danbury Flyers. But, the Flyers run, jump, and throw all year round, and the Flyers' outdoor season gets underway this week. 

Registration is now open for the outdoor track and field season; schedules and forms are available on the Danbury Flyers website.​ The first two practices of the season will be held on Wednesday, March 16, and Thursday, March 17; both practices will take place at Tarrywile Park from 6 to 7 p.m. All are welcome!
