Unbeaten Saunders Girls Rule Yonkers Soccer

YONKERS, N.Y. - The unbeaten Saunders High girls soccer team rolled to its 14th straight win Monday with a 9-0 victory over Yonkers-Riverside as the Blue Devils look forward to next week's Section 1 playoffs.

"We have to be ready for better competition, especially one defense," said tri-captain Amanda Smith, the team leader in goals with 22. "We've had a good season and now we have to play our best to go on in the playoffs."

The Blue Devils girls are led by tri-captains Linette Prasad, Jennifer Bustamante and Smith, who have helped the potent offense outscore opponents 75-13 over 14 games.

"The team has a good group of girls, many who play club soccer and have talent and experience," said Saunders' 16-year head coach Carlo Mitrione. "We have girls who like to distribute the ball and have the ability to score as well. We're looking forward to the playoffs and we hope to get a good seed."

The Jascinto sisters, freshman Zhane and older sister Alin, led the Saunders playmakers as six girls scored at least once in the win. Pamela Sanchez has scored 21 goals for the Devils and Zhane Jacinto leads the team with 16 assists.

"I like moving the ball to my teammates," Zhane Jacinto said. "We all have to be able to move the ball and see the field for our teammates so we can score. Assists are as good as goals."

The Blue Devils girls soccer team also includes; Sarahi Morillo, Gloriann Jaichon, Luz Garrido, Pamela Sanchez, Fernanda Uriba, Cinthia Sarmientos, Daritza Herrera, Ana Guzman, Linette Prasad (C), Wendy Condado, Allin Jacinto, Margaret Kenny, Chontal Garrido, Elizabeth Cruz, Evelyn Marin, Betzaida Blanco, Stephanie Mazzei, Nicole Perez, Joann Heady, Karina Gonzalez and Rebecca Jean- Baptiste.
