What Do You Think About Spending in Weston?

WESTON, Conn. – You still have a chance to give your opinion on Weston's spending plan for 2012-13.

“There is still an opportunity to talk … it is crucial that people participate,” Selectman David Muller said during Tuesday night’s budget workshop.

During this past week, the selectmen have heard spending proposals from First Selectman Gayle Weinstein and schools Superintendent Colleen Palmer for the next fiscal year. Weinstein is asking the selectmen to approve her budget request of $11,425,652, which calls for a 2.16 percent increase in spending over this year.

Palmer, who went before the selectmen Tuesday night, is proposing an increase of 0.93 percent, or $420,854. The total budget request for education cost is $45.6 million. The spending plans will cover July 2012 to June 2013.

A few people attended the meeting Tuesday night, all of whom were school administrators and members of the press. Muller said he would like to see an open dialogue between town officials and residents as the budget season kicks into high gear when members of the Board of Finance begin deliberations.

“Unless you come and speak your mind, you can’t complain afterward,” Muller added.
