Jane Phelps, 78, Longtime Ridgefield Resident

RIDGEFIELD, Conn. - Jane Phelps, a resident of Ridgefield since 1965, died Jan. 9. She was 78.

Phelps was born May 30, 1935, in Manhattan, to Raymond Huguet and Gabriella Guranyi Portman. Her family moved to Mount Vernon, N.Y., and then moved to New Rochelle, N.Y., two years later. She attended New Rochelle High School, The University of Rochester and The Berkeley School. Before her marriage she worked in The Staff Training Dept. of Caltex. After her marriage she moved with her husband to Brooklyn, N.Y., where she worked for The National Board of YMCAs in the Armed Services Dept. Later they moved to Yonkers, N.Y., and then to Ridgefield.

Shortly after moving to Ridgefield, she became active in the Red Cross working at bloodmobiles and set up free CPR classes at the Community Center. She was a member of the Community Center Women’s Committee for many years serving as vice president, incorporator and on the board of incorporators. She was a member of the Ridgefield Visiting Nurse Association, now the VNA, serving as vice president and incorporator. She served on the first Youth Commission as one of the VNA representatives. She and her husband also served as Justices of the Peace. In addition to her volunteer activities, she was a preschool teacher at The Methodist Nursery School.

Phelps is survived by her husband, Edwin J. “Jim” Phelps, Jr.; daughter, Carolyn Dent (The Rev. Thomas P. Dent) of Woodbine, Ga., Hilary Fisher (William H. Fisher III) of Peachtree City, Ga., and Alison Perry (Christopher) of Wilton; seven grandchildren; and a great grandson.

A memorial service in celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 15 at The First Congregational Church in Ridgefield.
