Fairfield Little Leaguers on a Roll

An all-Fairfield final could be in the cards in the District Two 12-year-old Little League Tournament if the town's American League and National League all-star teams can continue on their current path. Neither team has lost a game and both are winning in dominant fashion.

But despite the strong performances, there is still a lot of baseball left. The teams are currently in the preliminary round and both are set to advance into the double elimination semifinal round that begins on July 12. The winning team moves on to a regional round with a shot at the national tournament in Williamsport, Pa.

"We are getting sharp," said Fairfield National coach Ed Guella. "It is a team effort. We have a goal of teamwork, we win as a team and we lose as a team."

Players are pulled from the town's two Majors-level little leagues.

The Fairfield National squad (4-0) has allowed just one run in the four games it has played, including a 10-0 victory over Bridgeport's North End League on Tuesday. The National team, which is playing in the red division, has also defeated Trumbull National, Stratford and Westport American.

Meanwhile, the Fairfield American side (3-0), playing in the Blue Division, defeated Bridgeport's Park City 29-1 on Monday and has also defeated Easton and Trumbull American.

While the 12-year-olds get the most attention because of the shot at the Little League World Series, Fairfield's other age levels – 11- and 10-year-old -- have also not lost a game.

At the 12-year-old level, if the standings remain as is, Fairfield National would play either Monroe or Fairfield American (currently tied) in the semifinals in a double elimination format. If Fairfield American finishes first, it would play Westport American.

Fairfield National returns to action for one final preliminary game on Saturday against Trumbull National. Fairfield American plays two games with a chance at first place still on the line. The American squad faces Monroe (3-0) on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and finishes the first round against Westport National at 10:30 a.m on Saturday.

All games are played at Blackham Field in Bridgeport.

"It's going to be a battle," said Guella of the next round.
