WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Voters in New York State approved a constitutional amendment that will allow the construction of up to seven full-scale casinos within the state, according to The New York Times

The new legislation is intended to be an economic shot in the arm by providing new jobs and an increase in tourism funding for some of the state's most economically depressed areas. Construction of the first four casinos will only be permitted upstate, in areas like Albany, the Catskills-Hudson Valley Region and the Southern Tier near Pennsylvania, The Times reported.
