WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- A spokesman for Westchester County Executive Robert Astorino said Monday that there are no plans to ban firearms and gun shows at the Westchester County Center, according to lohud.com.

Speaking on behalf of the Republican county executive's office, Ned McCormack told lohud.com that banning gun shows at the county building would not address the underlying causes of gun violence in America.

There hasn't been a firearms show at the county center since 2012, according to the report, but a resident-driven petition to ban such events has garnered more than 1,200 signatures since Democratic Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner called for the reinstatement of a ban last week in the wake of the recent Oregon shootings.

According to lohud, former Westchester County Executive Andrew Spano, a Democrat, had banned firearm and gun shows at county-owned buildings soon after the Columbine shootings in 1999. The ban held until 2010.
